Gabapentin is a prescription medicine used to treat partial seizures, nerve pain from shingles (postherpetic neuralgia), and restless leg syndrome. It may be used off-label for alcohol withdrawal, anxiety, depression, and movement disorders. It works on the chemical messengers in your brain and nerves. Gabapentin brand names are Neurontin, Gralise, Horizant, Gabarone, and Relgaabi. The most serious risk is life-threatening slowed breathing when combined with opioids, alcohol, or other CNS depressants. Do not stop gabapentin suddenly.
